The Yard Ship Derrick was designed as the ‘tow truck’ of a Naval Shipyard during the second World War. It’s distinguishing feature was being self-propelled while other derricks were mounted on barges and had to be towed into place.

In addition to seaplanes, YSDs could also be found transporting boats, engines, or anything else that might need to be moved around the shipyard.
